A trading rule has little value if it changes whenever the market becomes difficult. Set your limits before the session. Then remove the option to loosen them after trading starts.
This protects the decision made with a calm mind from the decision made after a loss, a missed move or a sudden profit.
Why rules change during the session
Most traders do not plan to break a rule. The change happens one step at a time:
- The trade limit becomes “just one more”.
- The daily loss limit moves lower after a loss.
- A monitoring rule is switched off for one setup.
- A larger size feels justified after a missed opportunity.
Each change may feel small. Together, they remove the boundaries of the original plan.
Separate planning time from trading time
Use two clear phases.
Before the first trade
Review market conditions. Set your daily loss percentage, maximum entries and monitoring choices. Check the values. This is the time to edit the plan.
After the first trade
Treat risk rules as fixed. You may still close an open position. The goal is to stop loosening the rules that control new risk.
If a setting truly needs improvement, note it for the next session. Do not redesign the system during the same emotional event that made you want to change it.
Use a short pre-market rule card
Write down:
- Maximum entries for the account.
- Daily loss limit.
- Allowed position size.
- Whether the loss monitor must stay on.
- What happens after consecutive losses.
- The time after which no new entry is allowed.
Keep the list short enough to check every day. A complicated plan is easier to ignore.
How Zen Mode locks selected rules
Zensibly's Zen Mode lets you configure selected guardrails before trading. While it is on, the daily loss percentage, maximum trades, loss-monitor status and External-Trade Guard settings are frozen.
You can turn Zen Mode off before your first trade. After your first trade, it stays on until the next day. This prevents a mid-session decision from loosening those selected guardrails.
Zen Mode does not block every action inside a broker app. Trades placed outside Zensibly and broker connections have separate controls. Existing positions can still be closed.

Review without changing today's plan
At the end of the session, record:
- Which rule you wanted to change.
- What happened just before that urge.
- Whether the original rule was poorly designed or only uncomfortable.
- What evidence supports a change.
- The new rule for a future session, if a change is needed.
This keeps learning possible without reopening today's risk limits.
